Devils Top Islanders In Season Opener

Patrick Elias celebrates with Zach Parise after a goal.
The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders on Friday night by a score of 2-1, thanks in part to goals from Zach Parise and Patrick Elias. The Isles managed 26 shots on goal, but like many teams, had no answer for Martin Brodeur. Marty made 25 saves on the night, getting off to a fast start in a potential 2009/2009 Vezina Trophy bid.

“Marty is Marty. He is the best goalie of all-time,” said center Brian Rolston, acquired by the Devils over the off-season. “He was awesome again tonight and unfortunately that is what everyone is expecting of him.”

The Devils showed last night why I think they’ll take home the Atlantic Division. With Brodeur, Zach Parise, Patrick Elias, Jamie Langenbrunner, Jay Pandolfo, Brian Rolston, Dainus Zubrus and Brian Gionta, this team will most certainly be looking at playoff hockey come April of 2009.

New York, playing without Rick DiPietro, received a goal last night from new Islander Doug Weight. Weight, a center who has spent parts of last year with the St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks, scored on a power play in the first period. Other than that, nothing was doing for the Islanders. Exciting prospect Kyle Okposo managed four shots on goal, but Martin Brodeur is a tough match-up for a season opener no matter which team he’s opposing.

After the game, Patrick Elias lauded Brodeur for his efforts, and made reference to the fact that Brodeur is now just 12 wins behind Patrick Roy for the all time NHL wins record.

“Hopefully, he can get those wins he needs as quickly as possible, that’s the best for us. The more wins he gets, the better for the team. It looks like he hasn’t missed a beat. Nothing has changed. That’s great for us.”
